My name is Ani Sumarni. 33 years old, I work in a textile company at PT. NOVATEX, I've been with this company for 14 years. I work as a sizing machine operator, and work 8 hours every day. The basic wage that I get is in accordance with the minimum wage set by the government, but there are still shortages of overtime pay. We receive other rights such as menstrual leave, annual leave, sick leave, etc. especially for permanent workers. But for workers whose status is on a contract or casual daily basis, there is a difference from the basic wage, overtime pay and other normative rights that the company does not fully provide. The owner of our company is Korean, sometimes the system in the field is burdensome for us to do our work, if workers make mistakes, and sometimes we get treatment that is not allowed in our culture, because it can disturb the mentality of workers, so that workers feel uncomfortable at work. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in early March 2020, it has had an impact on the conditions of workers in our company, many of the policies offered by the company, ranging from changing wages, to global wages, termination of employment for contract workers and casual daily workers, without severance pay. And also the offer of termination of employment for permanent workers, with compensation paid not in accordance with the rules, and also to lay off some permanent workers, without being paid wages during their dismissal. This situation caused us a lot of trouble, and we didn't know what to do with all of these company policies, because we didn't have any unions in our work place. Finally, several workers and I contacted PPMP, and consulted about our situation in the company. And through meetings and discussions facilitated by PPMP, we were also directed to form a trade union, and start preparing people to learn about workers' rights and about organization. Finally in August 2020, we also succeeded in creating a trade union with the name of the Independent Prosperous Workers Union (SPSM), which at that time had only 40 members out of 500 workers. And we began to compile demands and hold bipartite / negotiations with companies, and several points from the negotiations resulted in agreements, one of which is the elimination of global wages, and the elimination of termination of employment, and other normative rights agreements, such as the right to menstrual leave, annual leave and sick leave. From the actions we have taken in the company, it has had a positive impact on the workers, and our members have also increased, until now there are 90 people who have joined. And every week, we manage always hold meetings and education, which are supervised by PPMP. At the moment, we are drafting demands again for a second negotiation with the company. By uniting workers in one company and willing to establish and run an organization, we are sure that no matter how difficult a workplace problem is, it can be resolved with the union of workers.
