The Philippine Young Christian Workers together with IYCW-ASPAC
participated in the yearly event “Walk for Life” organized by Sanguniang Laiko
ng Pilipinas, where YCW-Philippines is an affiliate member. The theme for this
year “Together, We Walk for Life” signifies the sanctity of life, thus everyone
has the responsibility to uphold, promote and defend the sacredness of life and
the dignity of every person. This resounds the deep value of YCW that “every
young worker is worth more than all the gold in the world.”
The event commenced at Welcome Rotonda, Quezon City at 4:00 o’clock in the morning with more than 5000 clergy and lay people coming from more than 90 church and civic organizations. The participants walked past through Espana Boulevard toward the University of Santo Thomas Grand Stand. A short program was held with cultural presentation from students of UST and with keynote speakers tackling the different threat to life in this millennia.
The 2024 Walk for Life is the 7th edition which was started since 2017 to protect and defend the “culture of life” against the “culture of death”, which is a big challenge in the Philippine society today; decriminalization of abortion, euthanasia, legalization of divorce, extra-judicial killings and many others.
For Young Christian Workers of the Philippines, the death trap and
death threat that young workers are facing right now are unemployment,
informalization of work and contractualization which is characterized by low
salary and lack of social protection which basically denied their human rights
and human life. The movement is calling for inclusive social protection because
social protection is pro-life.
