November 23, 2025 Takasago, Japan — The recent exchange program with former members of the JOC Japan in Takasago offered a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for workers’ rights and the transformative impact of collective action.
During the session, former YCW members
recounted their beginnings under inhumane working conditions, which compelled them
to organize fellow young workers. Their mission was clear: to raise awareness
and encourage collective action to improve their working
conditions. Through persistent organizing and mobilization, they eventually
established a union. Their collective struggle led to significant workplace
improvements, proving that solidarity and determination can bring about
meaningful change.
Beyond workplace victories, the former members emphasized how YCW shaped their lives in profound ways. They spoke of how the movement instilled values, strengthened relationships, and gave them a sense of purpose that continues to guide them today. Their testimonies highlighted YCW not only as a young workers movement but also as a community that nurtured personal growth and lifelong commitment to social justice.
Delegates listening to these stories were deeply moved. Many realized that the challenges faced by young workers decades ago remain strikingly similar today and, in some cases, conditions have worsened. Yet, rather than discouraging them, this realization sparked courage and determination. Inspired by the resilience of the former YCW members, the delegates left the exchange motivated to take action to change their realities.
The Takasago exchange program thus became
more than a sharing of memories; it was a bridge between generations. It
reminded delegates that the fight for dignity and justice in the workplace is ongoing,
and that the legacy of YCW continues to inspire young workers to stand
together, act collectively, and pursue a future where our rights and dignity are
respected.
