Building Leaders, Building Action: YCW Philippines Commitment to the Legacy of CardijnA Build-Up Activity Towards the Centenary Celebration

$rows[judul]

Since its foundation 100 years ago by Cardinal Joseph Cardijn, the Young Christian Workers (YCW) movement has remained steadfast in its commitment to transforming the lives of young workers through action, solidarity, and leadership development. Upholding this legacy, YCW Philippines - Camarines Norte continues to cultivate young leaders who are determined to address pressing issues in their workplaces and communities.

In line with this commitment, YCW Camarines Norte organized a two-day formation session on February 1-2, 2025, bringing together key leaders from across the province. This gathering aimed to deepen their understanding of their personal and collective realities as young workers and equip them with tools to analyze and act upon their challenges.

Strengthening Analysis and Reflection

The formation session focused on the "See" aspect of the YCW methodology—an essential step in understanding young workers' conditions and realities. Participants engaged in structured discussions to analyze various aspects of their lives, including work, study, family, and social dynamics. To facilitate this, they utilized the Tree of Analysis, a tool designed to help them identify the root causes and consequences of their problems. By doing so, they could develop a clearer perspective on the changes they needed to pursue both individually and collectively.

During the workshops, young workers highlighted several critical issues that they and their peers face daily:

  • Financial and family struggles – Many young workers grapple with economic difficulties, often supporting their families while dealing with rising living costs.
  • Unstable jobs and income – The prevalence of contractual and precarious employment leaves young workers in a state of uncertainty about their future.
  • Teenage pregnancy – A recurring concern affecting young women, often impacting their education and career opportunities.
  • Mental health challenges – The pressures of work, family, and social expectations contribute to stress and anxiety among young workers.
  • Influence of social media – While digital platforms offer opportunities for connection and awareness, they also bring challenges such as misinformation, cyberbullying, and unrealistic societal standards.

Through in-depth discussions, participants recognized the urgent need for concrete actions to address these issues. They identified steps they could take, whether at a personal level or through collective advocacy within their communities and workplaces.

Fostering Solidarity and Motivation

Beyond discussions and analysis, the event also focused on strengthening the camaraderie and faith of young workers. On the evening of February 1, the group gathered around a bonfire for an open sharing session. This reflective moment allowed participants to express their personal experiences, struggles, and motivations, reinforcing the bond among them. Through storytelling and testimonials, they found encouragement in each other’s journeys and reaffirmed their commitment to social transformation guided by their faith and beliefs.

Preparing for the Centenary Celebration

As YCW International prepares to mark its 100 Years in Action in 2025, this formation session served as a significant build-up activity for YCW Camarines Norte. It underscored the movement’s dedication to empowering young workers and strengthening its base groups. By fostering leaders who are ready to take action, the event reaffirmed YCW’s mission of forming young workers who are committed to justice, solidarity, and positive change.

With strengthened resolve, the young leaders of YCW Camarines Norte move forward with a shared vision—to continue the legacy of Cardijn and uphold the values of YCW for future generations of young workers.
