The Mercedes Young Fisherfolk Association (MYFA) is a registered and recognized organization under the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE Registration No. R0500-CN-1123-083-21). Its primary objective is to improve the lives of young workers in Mercedes, particularly those in the fishing industry. MYFA actively lobbies for support and access to government programs and benefits, such as skills training, access to resources, and small capital to start livelihood projects.

On January 15, 2025, MYFA, led by President Mr. Ronnie Cereno and its members, held a meeting and discussion with Municipal Mayor Alexander Lo Pajarillo, Provincial DTI Officer Ms. Jobbee Sales, YCW-CN Adult Collaborator Ma’am Nora Lobos, and YCW Organizer Mr. Jolbert Byron Rodenas. The discussion focused on how the shared facility can benefit the livelihoods of young fisherfolk by supporting the production of dried and processed fish. They also planned programs aimed at developing sustainable livelihood initiatives for the community.

To formalize its partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Mercedes, MYFA applied for accreditation on January 24, 2025. This accreditation, led by MYFA President Ronnie Cereno and YCW Organizer Jolbert Rodenas, is a key requirement for obtaining the shared facility grant from the LGU. Establishing this formal relationship with the local government will enable the association to access shared resources and facilities.

This action is a significant step toward providing alternative livelihoods for young fisherfolk and the wider community, especially during the “Amihan” season when strong sea winds make fishing difficult, leading to poor harvests. During this period, many young people and families in the community face a loss of income, forcing them into debt or migration in search of work. The municipality is also frequently impacted by typhoons and other natural disasters between August and February, further disrupting livelihoods.

To alleviate the hardships caused by these challenges, MYFA has lobbied for government support and reached out to other donors. Thanks to their efforts, MYFA has secured funds and resources, enabling them to distribute rice, canned goods, and other essentials to approximately 70 households in Barangay 6, Mercedes, Camarines Norte. These provisions offered temporary relief to affected families.

Looking ahead, MYFA envisions a thriving community and association built on shared responsibility, common goals, and collective dreams. The association is committed to providing updates on its progress as it works toward sustainable livelihoods and a brighter future for young fisherfolk and their families.
