A Labor Day Celebration

$rows[judul]

Every drop of sweat and blood, every sighs and tears, all the days and nights of work lead us to be to together fighting and celebrating in this day of labor. From the peasant who tills the land for food on the table of all societies, for the construction workers who labored on the infrastructure of the country, for our professionals teachers, doctors, community workers, migrant workers and other workers in the society, the working condition has not improved nor changed a bit. There is a designed system in which young people and workers are bound to follow. Otherwise, it would be impossible for the workers to have an access to any decent job or any job at all. The search for just work and the clamor for decent and dignified life are as elusive as it has always been.

With the extensive labor export policies of Asian government, workers were considered as commodities and part of the trading industry. Labor force or manpower became the backbone of most of the developing country. Philippines, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan were among the countries that have been sending migrant work-ers to improve their economy through the remittances. Their sacrifies payed for the benefits that their families and government receive. Despite of these realities, con-crete programs from the government to stop the migration of their own work-ers are all unclear. For instance social security ismandatorily paid by themi-grant workers from Indonesia and Philippines even if they will not use it because there will be a difference in terms policies of the receiving countries. An amount of Php2,400.00 or US$50.00 has to be payed by Filipino domestic worker before they can leave the country. Young workers suffered so much from the contractualization scheme.

A race to bottom wages can be found in every Asian countries. Within every country, regional wage is present in different formats. In DKI Jakarta Indonesia, workers minimum wage is INR3,648,035 compared to Nusa Tenggara T is only INR 1,660,000. While in National Capital Region in Philippines workers receives Php537.00 or US$10.74 versus to Region V Bicol only Php395/ day or US$7.9. Income is really not enough to sustain the everyday needs of the family. Wages are very cheap and yet the prices of basic commodities keep on surging high. Not to mention the electricity and water utilities because of privatization in which the government has no control in prices. The government has done no concrete action so far instead, it uses its machineries to cripple down all the effort made by the working sector to better their work situation. Government answered the call of workers by union busting, no implementation of Freedom of Association (FOA), illegal dismissal, filing of false cases to the leaders and members of the workers and much worse is the extra judicial killings. Neo Liberal policies really destroyed the labor and human rights of workers. The call for solidarity actions among workers to fight for the rights is necessary. The contradiction between the government effort and the workers true yearning for better labor conditions call for immediate and unified action. Every day is labor day!
